Overijssel stretches across 3,420 square kilometres of eastern Netherlands, where the Vecht river winds through a landscape of peat bogs, wooded estates and waterways that once powered a thriving textile industry. The province is home to Giethoorn, a village with no roads where travel happens entirely by boat along its network of canals. From the Hanseatic trading towns of Deventer, Zwolle and Kampen — each with centuries-old merchant houses lining cobbled streets — to the vast wetlands of Nationaal Park Weerribben-Wieden, Overijssel rewards those who take their time. The distance from Zwolle to Enschede is roughly 80 kilometres, while Kampen to Hardenberg covers about 75 kilometres, making the province easy to explore at a relaxed pace. Rolling hills in the Sallandse Heuvelrug national park offer heathland walks and cycling trails, and the fortified town of Ootmarsum in the east feels like stepping into a painting. Flat, well-maintained roads and plentiful campervan service points make Overijssel ideal for a road trip by motorhome or campervan. With Yescapa, you can hire a vehicle directly from local owners across the province, choosing from compact campervans to fully equipped family motorhomes. This peer-to-peer approach means more choice, competitive pricing and personal tips from people who know Overijssel best.
May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Overijssel, when long daylight hours and mild temperatures make outdoor exploring a pleasure. The Deventer Boekenmarkt, held on the first Sunday in August, transforms the city centre into one of Europe's largest book markets. In September, the Kamper Ui-Dagen celebrates the region's onion-growing heritage with parades and tastings. Booking through Yescapa during spring or early autumn often means better availability and friendlier peer-to-peer rates, while summer remains the most popular season — so reserving your motorhome a few weeks ahead is a smart move.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 120 km loop connects the historic trading towns of Zwolle, Kampen, Hattem and Deventer. Wander medieval merchant streets, sample Deventer honey cake and park up easily — campervan-friendly spots are plentiful along the route. Allow 3 to 6 days to soak it all in.
An 80 km route through Overijssel's wetland heart, passing Giethoorn's car-free canals and Nationaal Park Weerribben-Wieden. Ideal for compact campervans, with quiet overnight spots near the water. Three to five days gives you time for boat trips and birdwatching.
A 250 km circuit linking Sallandse Heuvelrug's heathlands, the fortified village of Ootmarsum and the Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede. Suitable for both campervans and motorhomes, with well-equipped stopovers throughout Overijssel. Five to eight days lets you hike, cycle and explore at leisure.
Covering 300 km from Kampen on the IJssel river to Oldenzaal near the German border, this route crosses Overijssel's full breadth. Stop at Dalfsen's castle estates and the textile heritage of Almelo. A motorhome suits the spacious pitches along the way — plan five to eight days.
This 450 km loop pairs Overijssel's waterways with the forests of the Veluwe. Visit Zwolle, Giethoorn, Hardenberg and swing south through Apeldoorn's Het Loo Palace grounds. Seven to eleven days suits this varied route, with campervan service points well spaced throughout.
At 550 km, this extended tour follows Overijssel's eastern edge from Steenwijk south to Enschede, crossing into German towns like Bad Bentheim and Nordhorn. Eight to fifteen days allows for relaxed border-hopping, and motorhome facilities on both sides are excellent.

Overijssel offers a fine spread of campsites, from waterside pitches near Giethoorn's canals to woodland sites in the Sallandse Heuvelrug area. Most sites cater to both campervans and motorhomes with electric hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal and modern shower blocks. Many also provide Wi-Fi, laundry facilities and on-site shops, making longer stays in Overijssel comfortable and convenient.
Overijssel is well connected by the A28 motorway linking Zwolle to Amersfoort and the A1 running east towards Hengelo and the German border. Dutch motorways are toll-free, so there are no vignettes or toll booths to worry about. The national speed limit on motorways is 100 km/h during the day (06:00–19:00) and 120 or 130 km/h at night, though motorhomes over 3,500 kg are limited to 80 km/h on all roads outside built-up areas. Rest areas with waste-disposal facilities appear regularly along major routes, and signage is clear and consistent throughout the province.
Me and my girlfriend rentet Miguels Van for 4 days. We had some of the best 4 days of our lives - waking up to the sunset along the West coast and exploring beautiful places and beaches. We can highly recommend Miguel and his van🙏🏼.
Great guests who looked after the vehicle with care and returned it in excellent condition. A pleasure to rent to, and we’d gladly welcome them again!
Todo fue sencillo y claro. La caravana era excelente, limpia y cómoda. Pasamos unas vacaciones maravillosas.
Very well maintained vehicle. Alfredo took extra care to add more equipment we requested and was very responsive during the rent period.
