Why hire a campervan or motorhome in New South Wales

New South Wales — a region worth exploring

New South Wales stretches across 801,150 square kilometres of Australia's eastern seaboard, making it the country's most populous state and home to over 200 national parks. From the sandstone cliffs of the Blue Mountains to the surf breaks at Byron Bay, the landscape shifts dramatically as you travel. Sydney to Broken Hill covers roughly 1,160 km, crossing coastal plains, fertile farmlands, and the red-earth outback, while the 290 km drive south from Sydney to Jervis Bay reveals white-sand beaches and the Shoalhaven River valley. The Snowy Mountains, home to Mount Kosciuszko at 2,228 metres, offer alpine scenery rarely associated with Australia, and the Hunter Valley — one of the country's oldest wine regions — sits just two hours north of Sydney. Coastal towns like Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie provide excellent overnight stops with well-equipped campsite facilities, and the network of rest areas along major highways makes travelling by campervan or motorhome both comfortable and practical. Whether you want to explore rainforest trails in Dorrigo National Park or watch whales migrate past Jervis Bay, a campervan gives you the flexibility to follow your own schedule. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across New South Wales, choosing from a wide range of motorhomes and campervans that suit your group size and travel style.

Best time to visit

New South Wales is a year-round destination for campervan travel. Spring (September to November) brings wildflower displays across the Blue Mountains and comfortable temperatures for driving. Summer is ideal for the coast, and January's Sydney Festival fills the city with music and performance. Autumn (March to May) suits the Hunter Valley, when harvest season is in full swing and the vineyards turn golden. Winter draws travellers to the Snowy Mountains for alpine adventures. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform often means more competitive pricing outside peak summer months, and you can find campervans and motorhomes available from owners right across New South Wales.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in New South Wales

New South Wales has an extensive motorway network, and most major routes are toll-free outside the Sydney metropolitan area. Within Sydney, electronic tolling applies on roads like the M2, M5, and the Sydney Harbour Tunnel — you will need an e-tag or pass, which can be arranged online before your trip. The general speed limit on open highways is 110 km/h, though vehicles over 4.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h. Rest areas with free overnight parking are well signposted along the Pacific Highway and the Princes Highway, making long-distance motorhome travel straightforward. Be aware that some mountain passes in the Snowy Mountains region may require snow chains in winter.

Feeling right at home Traveling across Portugal with Koda was a perfect, unique, and wonderful experience ☺️ Carina and Rafaela met us right at the airport and explained everything about the van—covering every detail clearly and effectively. We had never taken an off-the-cuff trip like this before; without any set plans, we drove all the way to Sagres, navigating easily through narrow roads, campsites, and stunning beaches 😍 Its compact size makes it comfortable to drive almost immediately, allowing for effortless maneuvering even on narrow roads, whether driving uphill or on light off-road terrain. The van is fully equipped: it has kitchenware, a sink, a convenient handheld shower, and even a solar shower, plus two camping chairs and an easy-to-assemble table. The bed is incredibly comfortable, and when not in use, it converts into a small bench. It was easy and delightful to feel right at home during this vacation; we can’t wait to return to Portugal to explore the north with Koda 🧡

Reliable, responsible, and friendly—10/10 renters, highly recommended to any owner on Yescapa!

Obrigada, Tiago!
