Why choose Manchester for your road trip

Manchester — a city worth exploring

Manchester's industrial past gave the world the first programmable computer, built at the University of Manchester in 1948. Today, the city pulses with creativity and culture, from the galleries of The Whitworth to the football heritage on display at the National Football Museum. The Manchester Ship Canal, stretching 58 km to the Irish Sea, once made this inland city one of Britain's busiest ports — and the waterfront at Salford Quays is now home to The Lowry theatre and Imperial War Museum North. Music lovers can trace decades of iconic sound at venues like Band on the Wall in the Northern Quarter, while science fans will find hours of hands-on discovery at the Museum of Science and Industry. Liverpool sits just 56 km to the west along the M62, and the Peak District National Park begins only 20 km to the east, making Manchester an ideal base for exploring both coast and countryside. The city's flat terrain and well-connected ring road make driving a motorhome straightforward, though the compact centre is best explored on foot. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from a local owner — someone who knows the best routes out of Manchester and can share tips you won't find in any guidebook. That peer-to-peer approach means more choice, competitive prices, and a personal touch that sets your trip apart from the start. Whether you're heading into the Pennines or along the Cheshire plains, a campervan rented in Manchester puts the whole of northern England within easy reach.

Best time to visit

Manchester welcomes visitors year-round, with each season offering something special. The Manchester International Festival takes over the city every two years in July, filling venues with world-premiere performances. June brings Parklife Festival to Heaton Park, drawing music fans from across the country. Spring and early autumn are great for campervan travel — campsites in the Peak District and Cheshire are easy to book, and the roads are quieter. Summer is the most popular season, so reserving your motorhome early through Yescapa gives you the widest choice from local owners at fair peer-to-peer prices. Manchester stays lively through winter too, with its famous Christmas Markets running from November to December.

Where to park your motorhome

Parking a motorhome or campervan in Manchester is manageable with a bit of planning. The city centre has height restrictions on most multi-storey car parks, so surface-level options are your best bet. Overnight parking on public streets is generally permitted unless signage states otherwise, but always check local restrictions. For longer stays, dedicated sites on the outskirts offer more space and peace of mind. The Metrolink tram connects outer areas to the centre, so you can park further out and still explore easily.

  • EventCity Car Park, 5km west — Large surface-level car park near the Trafford Centre with no height barriers. Suitable for motorhomes during events and day visits.
  • Heaton Park Car Park, 7km north — Free car park within one of Manchester's largest parks. Spacious bays and Metrolink access from nearby Heaton Park tram stop.
  • The Quays Car Park, 4km west — Surface car park at Salford Quays, close to The Lowry and Imperial War Museum North. Height-friendly for campervans and well-lit overnight.

incredibly friendly and took the time to explain how everything worked, making the whole experience easy and enjoyable from the start. The camper van was a pleasure to drive and came fully equipped with everything we could possibly need. He was also available 24/7 to help with any questions and recommended some amazing routes around the island. As first-time camper van travellers, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience, and we would absolutely do it again. It was truly an unforgettable adventure.

The camper was exactly as expected, it was clean and everything worked as it should. It drove well and was surprisingly economical considering its size. The booking process was easy but collection gave a few challenges. The renters location is wrong in the listing as there are two Sauzets in south west France. Coupled with the renter mistakenly not delivering the camper to the correct address meant we were a day late starting our trip. A refund for the missing day was immediately agreed. In all an easy experience once the pickup location was cleared up.

Nuestra experience no pudo ir mejor. Nico es un host excelente y muy atento a cualquier pregunta que teniamos. La furgoneta ademas iba muy bien y pudimos darle la vuelta complete a la isla sin problemas. Totalmente recomendado!
