Why choose Leeds for your road trip

Leeds — a city worth exploring

Leeds sits at the meeting point of the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, a 204-kilometre waterway completed in 1816 that still welcomes narrowboats today. The city centre is compact enough to explore on foot, yet the surrounding countryside opens up quickly for those travelling by road. The Royal Armouries Museum houses one of the world's oldest collections of arms and armour, while Kirkstall Abbey, a ruined 12th-century Cistercian monastery, stands just five kilometres west of the centre along the river. For art lovers, Leeds Art Gallery on The Headrow displays works from Turner to Henry Moore, and the Corn Exchange — a striking Grade I listed Victorian building — is packed with independent shops. York is only 40 km to the north-east, making it an easy day trip, and the Peak District National Park begins roughly 80 km to the south, offering dramatic moorland and quiet lanes ideal for a campervan adventure. Leeds itself is well connected by the M1 and M62 motorways, so reaching the Dales or the east coast is straightforward even in a larger motorhome. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across West Yorkshire, which often means flexible pick-up points and first-hand tips on the best routes out of the city. Whether you are planning a weekend escape or a longer tour of northern England, Leeds is a practical and rewarding starting point.

Best time to visit

Leeds welcomes visitors comfortably throughout the year. The Leeds Festival, one of the UK's biggest music events, takes place every August bank holiday weekend in Bramham Park, drawing large crowds and creating a lively atmosphere across the region. In November, the Leeds International Film Festival fills cinemas and venues citywide. Summer months are ideal for campervan trips into the Yorkshire Dales, with long daylight hours and pleasant driving conditions. Book early for July and August — they are the most popular months on Yescapa, and local owners' vehicles tend to be reserved quickly. Spring and autumn bring quieter roads and lower hire prices, perfect for a relaxed tour.

Top getaways from Leeds

Leeds is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Leeds to Skipton

60km northwest 1–4 days

Head 60 km north-west from Leeds to Skipton, gateway to the Yorkshire Dales. Stop at Bolton Abbey to walk along the River Wharfe, then explore Skipton Castle, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in England. Campervan parking is available near the canal basin, and the market town has plenty of local produce to stock up on.

Leeds to York

40km northeast 1–3 days

York is just 40 km north-east of Leeds and deserves at least a full day. Walk the medieval city walls, visit York Minster — one of Europe's largest Gothic cathedrals — and wander through The Shambles. The Rowntree Park area offers convenient motorhome parking close to the centre, so you can leave the vehicle and explore on foot.

Leeds to the North York Moors

130km north 3–6 days

Drive 130 km north from Leeds into the North York Moors National Park. Visit the steam-powered North Yorkshire Moors Railway at Pickering, walk to the Hole of Horcum, and reach the fishing village of Whitby on the coast. Several campsites along the route welcome campervans and offer electric hook-ups with scenic moorland views.

Leeds to the Lake District

150km northwest 3–6 days

The Lake District lies roughly 150 km north-west of Leeds via the M6. Spend time at Windermere, England's largest natural lake, hike to Aira Force waterfall near Ullswater, and visit the charming town of Keswick. Roads around the lakes can be narrow, so a campervan is more practical than a larger vehicle. Campsites near Ambleside fill up in summer — plan ahead.

Leeds to the Cotswolds

210km south 5–8 days

Travel 210 km south from Leeds to reach the Cotswolds, passing through the Peak District along the way. Stop at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, then continue to Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold. The rolling hills and honey-coloured villages make for relaxed motorhome touring, with well-equipped campsites scattered throughout the area.

Leeds to the Scottish Borders

250km north 5–8 days

Head 250 km north from Leeds to explore the Scottish Borders. Visit Alnwick Castle and its famous gardens in Northumberland, cross into Scotland to see Melrose Abbey, and follow the River Tweed through Kelso. The A1 and A68 provide good road surfaces for campervans, and quiet campsites near Jedburgh offer a peaceful overnight stay.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Leeds

Sandro and gus were on hand to help with any issues that arose. Loads of power for the steep windy roads, the van was well equiped and comfortable . An extra blanket for parking at altetude was apreciated as it was cooler up the hills. Shower worked but not much hot water. We had a small scrape with another car and insurance sorted the third party but we lost some of our deposit to repair van. Sandro was very helpfull and there was no dramas. So maybe paying for comprehensive insurance would be a better plan in future.

We had the best time getting to know Portugal with Marta and Renato’s beautiful van. It had everything we needed to enjoy a very comfortable trip. The van was extremely well designed inside and out and ran very smoothly throughout the whole trip. I wouldn’t hesitate to book it again but this time for much longer! Marta was a very helpful, kind and responsive host. 5 stars all round :)
