Why choose Hamburg for your road trip

Hamburg — a city worth exploring

Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie concert hall rises 110 metres above the River Elbe, its wave-shaped glass façade completed in 2017 after sixteen years of construction. Germany's second-largest city is a port metropolis where maritime heritage meets forward-thinking culture. Stroll through the Speicherstadt, the world's largest warehouse district and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, then cross over to HafenCity, one of Europe's most ambitious urban development projects. The Miniatur Wunderland, home to the planet's biggest model railway, draws millions of visitors each year, while the Kunsthalle Hamburg houses seven centuries of European art across three connected buildings. Lübeck, famous for its marzipan and medieval old town, sits just 65 km to the northeast, and the sandy beaches of the North Sea coast at Cuxhaven are roughly 120 km to the northwest. Hamburg's flat terrain and well-maintained roads make it easy to navigate in larger vehicles, and the network of canals — more bridges than Venice, Amsterdam, and London combined — gives the city a distinctive waterside character. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the Hamburg area, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace while benefiting from peer-to-peer pricing and personal recommendations from people who know the region best.

Best time to visit

Hamburg welcomes visitors year-round, with each season offering something special. The Hafengeburtstag in May, the world's largest port festival, fills the waterfront with tall ships, live music, and fireworks — a brilliant time to be parked up near the Elbe. Summer months bring long daylight hours ideal for exploring by campervan, and the Hamburg DOM funfair runs three times a year in spring, summer, and winter. Booking your motorhome through Yescapa during spring or early autumn often means more choice from local owners and competitive peer-to-peer rates. Plan ahead for the summer school holidays when campsites around Hamburg are at their liveliest.

incredibly friendly and took the time to explain how everything worked, making the whole experience easy and enjoyable from the start. The camper van was a pleasure to drive and came fully equipped with everything we could possibly need. He was also available 24/7 to help with any questions and recommended some amazing routes around the island. As first-time camper van travellers, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience, and we would absolutely do it again. It was truly an unforgettable adventure.

The camper was exactly as expected, it was clean and everything worked as it should. It drove well and was surprisingly economical considering its size. The booking process was easy but collection gave a few challenges. The renters location is wrong in the listing as there are two Sauzets in south west France. Coupled with the renter mistakenly not delivering the camper to the correct address meant we were a day late starting our trip. A refund for the missing day was immediately agreed. In all an easy experience once the pickup location was cleared up.
