Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Friesland

Friesland — a region worth exploring

Friesland is the only Dutch province with its own officially recognised language — West Frisian — spoken by around 350,000 people alongside Dutch. Stretching from the Wadden Sea coast in the north to the Frisian Lakes in the south, this province offers a landscape shaped by water, wind and centuries of land reclamation. The distance from Leeuwarden, the provincial capital, to the harbour town of Harlingen is just 28 km, while a drive from Sneek to the Lauwersoog ferry terminal covers roughly 75 km, giving you a sense of how compact yet varied Friesland really is. Highlights include the Alde Feanen National Park, a wetland reserve ideal for birdwatching from a lakeside pitch, and the historic Sloten, one of the smallest fortified cities in the Netherlands. The Wadden Islands of Terschelling and Ameland sit just off the coast, reachable by ferry and perfect for day trips. Friesland's flat terrain and well-maintained roads make it wonderfully easy to explore by campervan or motorhome, with no mountain passes or tight switchbacks to worry about. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the province, choosing from compact vans suited to couples or larger motorhomes for families. Whether you are following the Elfstedentocht route through eleven historic towns or parking up beside a quiet mere, Friesland rewards those who take the slower road.

Best time to visit

Friesland is at its liveliest between May and September, when long daylight hours open up the lakes and coastline for cycling, sailing and waterside camping. June brings the famous Oerol Festival on Terschelling, a ten-day celebration of art, music and theatre across the island. In autumn, the Frisian Lakes host traditional skûtsjesilen regattas, a spectacle of historic flat-bottomed sailing boats racing through September. Booking a campervan through Yescapa during the shoulder months of May or September often means more competitive peer-to-peer pricing and quieter campsites across Friesland. Plan ahead for July and August to secure your preferred vehicle and pitch.

The best road trips in Friesland

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Eleven Cities Route

200 km 3–6 days

Follow the legendary Elfstedentocht through all eleven Friesland cities over 200 km. Start in Leeuwarden, pass through Sneek and Sloten, and loop back via Dokkum. Ideal for campervans, with plenty of compact stopovers along the way. Allow 3–6 days to explore each town at your own pace.

Wadden Coast and Terp Villages

120 km 3–5 days

This 120 km route traces Friesland's northern coastline from Harlingen to Lauwersoog. Visit the ancient terp village of Hogebeintum and stop at the Wadden Sea dykes for birdwatching. A campervan is perfect for the quiet coastal roads. Plan 3–5 days to soak in the wide-open skies.

Southern Lakes Loop

90 km 3–5 days

A gentle 90 km loop through Friesland's lake district, linking Sneek, Heeg and Langweer. Waterside campsites welcome both campervans and motorhomes, and the flat roads make driving effortless. Spend 3–5 days cycling towpaths and watching traditional skûtsje sailing boats glide past.

350 km 5–8 days

Cover 350 km on a full loop of Friesland, from Leeuwarden north to the Wadden coast, west to Harlingen, south through the lake district and east via Heerenveen. Motorhomes have ample space on the well-maintained N-roads. Allow 5–8 days for a thorough exploration of the province.

Islands and Coastline Trail

This 500 km route ventures from Leeuwarden through eastern Friesland into the border area near Drenthe and Groningen, returning via the Alde Feanen National Park. Suited to larger motorhomes on spacious provincial roads. Take 7–11 days to discover quiet villages, peatlands and nature reserves.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Friesland

Friesland's roads are toll-free, as are all motorways in the Netherlands. The A7 and A31 are the main motorways crossing the province, connecting Leeuwarden to Heerenveen and Harlingen respectively. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3,500 kg are 80 km/h on rural roads and 100 km/h on motorways, while lighter campervans follow standard car limits of 130 km/h on motorways where signposted. Rest areas with designated motorhome parking are well spaced along major routes. Be aware that some rural dyke roads in Friesland are narrow, so larger vehicles should stick to N-roads and motorways where possible.

We had an outstanding experience renting from Antonio and his family. Antonio and his son Ricardo provided clear, thorough instructions on operating the camper, ensuring we felt confident from the start. Throughout the trip, Ricardo's communication and support were excellent—always responsive and helpful. At the end of the rental, their evaluation was fair, transparent, and reasonable. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a smooth camper rental experience!

Amazing trip! I travelled with a friend all around the Dolomites in Nicola's van. It was incredible, it couldn't have gone better. The van is fully equipped with everything you need. We did feel a little cold the first night so we got some blankets at a local shop to upgrade the ones available in the van. The only thing worth mentioning is that the pick-up/drop-off location is a bit inconvenient (relatively far away), but for the price and quality, it's definitely worth it. The hosts were super attentive to everything we needed. Thank you!
