Why choose Florence for your road trip

Florence — a city worth exploring

Florence's Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore took 140 years to build and its dome, engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi in 1436, remains the largest masonry dome ever constructed. The city sits in the Arno Valley, surrounded by the rolling hills of Tuscany, making it a superb base for exploring the region by road. Wander through the Galleria degli Uffizi to see Botticelli's Birth of Venus, cross the medieval Ponte Vecchio lined with jewellery shops, and climb up to Piazzale Michelangelo for a panoramic view over the terracotta rooftops. The Basilica di San Lorenzo, with its Medici Chapels, and the Giardino di Boboli behind Palazzo Pitti offer quieter moments away from the main squares. Siena lies just 75 km to the south, while Lucca is around 80 km to the west — both are easy day trips along well-maintained Tuscan roads that wind through vineyards and olive groves. The surrounding countryside is gentle and well-suited to larger vehicles, though the historic centre itself is a restricted traffic zone (ZTL), so plan to park outside and walk in. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Florence area, giving you the flexibility to set your own pace and discover Tuscany on your own terms.

Best time to visit

Florence welcomes visitors warmly throughout the year. Spring is ideal for exploring on foot and by campervan, with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival running from April to June filling the city with opera and concerts. September and October bring the grape harvest season, perfect for driving through Chianti's vineyards. Summer is the most popular period, so booking your motorhome on Yescapa early gives you the best choice from local owners. Winter offers a quieter Florence, with fewer crowds at the Uffizi and festive Christmas markets in Piazza Santa Croce during December.

Florence to Lucca

80km northwest 1–3 days

Florence to Volterra and San Gimignano

105km southwest 3–5 days

This 105 km route southwest of Florence links two medieval hilltop towns. San Gimignano impresses with its tower houses, while Volterra offers the Etruscan Museo Guarnacci. The van suited our family of four nicely for a four-night trip. Christelle was very kind, communicated well, and took her time with us both during the pickup and dropoff. We really appreciated her patience with our limited French! We hope to be back.
