Why choose Dresden for your road trip

Dresden — a city worth exploring

Dresden's Frauenkirche, rebuilt from 1994 to 2005 using over 3,800 original stones recovered from wartime rubble, stands as one of Europe's most remarkable restoration projects. Sitting on the banks of the River Elbe, this Saxon capital blends baroque grandeur with a forward-looking cultural scene. The Zwinger Palace houses the Old Masters Picture Gallery, home to Raphael's Sistine Madonna, while the Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault) displays one of the richest treasure collections on the continent. A walk along the Brühl's Terrace offers sweeping views across the river towards the Neustadt quarter, where independent galleries and relaxed cafés line the streets. Beyond the city centre, the Elbe Valley stretches in both directions — the Pillnitz Castle and its botanical gardens sit just 10 km southeast, and the dramatic sandstone formations of Saxon Switzerland National Park begin roughly 35 km to the south. The roads along the Elbe are well-suited to larger vehicles, with gentle gradients and wide lanes making the drive enjoyable for any setup. Hiring a campervan or motorhome through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners in the Dresden area, meaning you can often pick up your vehicle right in the city and set off without delay. With a campervan, you have the freedom to combine Dresden's world-class museums with the natural beauty of the surrounding Saxony region at your own pace.

Best time to visit

Dresden is a rewarding destination throughout the year. The Dresdner Musikfestspiele in May and June fills the city with classical concerts in historic venues, while the Striezelmarkt — one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets, running since 1434 — transforms the Altmarkt square each December. Summer months bring long daylight hours ideal for exploring the Elbe Valley by campervan, and campsites in the surrounding area are fully open with all facilities. Spring and autumn offer quieter roads and easy availability at local sites. Booking through Yescapa during the shoulder season often means more choice from local owners and competitive hire rates.

Where to park your motorhome

Dresden offers several options for parking a campervan or motorhome within and around the city. Overnight parking in a motorhome is generally permitted in Germany where no local signs prohibit it, but stays are limited to one night for rest purposes only — setting up chairs or awnings is not allowed. For longer stays, dedicated motorhome parking areas (Stellplätze) provide a more comfortable and legal option, often with basic services. Always check local signage for height and weight restrictions before parking.

  • Wohnmobilstellplatz Dresden-Blasewitz, 4km east — Dedicated motorhome parking area near the Elbe with flat hardstanding pitches, water supply, and waste disposal. A short tram ride from the old town.
  • Stellplatz am Elbufer Johannstadt, 2km east — Central riverside parking close to the Großer Garten park. Limited spaces available, so arrive early. Basic facilities with easy walking access to the Altstadt.
  • Parkplatz Pieschener Allee, 3km northwest — Spacious car park near the Elbe in the Pieschen district. Suitable for larger vehicles with no height barriers. Close to local restaurants and the riverside cycling path.

We had a great Motorhome Experience in the Dordogne area in France! Guy’s motorhome had everything we needed for a comfortable and adventurous stay. A great kingsize bed (for a motorhome anyway…) and large fridge, warm water, heating everything is there. If you’re looking for a reliable modern motorhome rental , we highly recommend renting Guy’s motorhome. Marian & Wim.

It was our first time traveling with a camper, and renting this one for our trip around Mallorca turned out to be an absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience that exceeded all our expectations. The camper was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Everything was well-maintained and thoughtfully equipped, which made our first camper trip easy and enjoyable. Communication with Gustavo was excellent from start to finish. He always responded very quickly, was friendly and helpful, and made the whole process smooth and stress-free. He also shared some fantastic recommendations for places to visit and park around the island, which made our trip even better. We couldn't have asked for a better first camper experience and would highly recommend both the camper and Gustavo to anyone planning a trip to Mallorca. We would happily rent it again in the future!

It was perfect. The owner is a very nice guy who picked us up from Funchal to get to Machico and explained everything about the car. The car included everything that was needed for our roadtrip. The tent is spacious and the amenities were of good quality. Overall it was an amazing experience to enjoy the island this way!
