Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Drenthe

Drenthe — a region worth exploring

Drenthe is home to 52 hunebedden — ancient megalithic tombs built over 5,000 years ago — making it the only province in the Netherlands where these prehistoric monuments can be found. Stretching across a landscape of heathlands, peat bogs, and quiet forests, Drenthe offers a pace of travel that feels worlds apart from the busy Randstad. The province covers roughly 2,680 square kilometres, with Assen as its capital and Emmen as its largest town, about 65 km to the south-east. From the open expanses of the Dwingelderveld National Park, the largest wet heathland in western Europe, to the charming village of Orvelte — a living open-air museum — there is plenty to discover at your own rhythm. The Drentsche Aa brook valley system winds through the heart of the province, creating one of the most intact stream valley landscapes in north-western Europe. Cycling and walking paths criss-cross the region, but exploring by campervan or motorhome gives you the freedom to cover more ground while keeping your accommodation with you. Roads are well-maintained and largely flat, so even larger vehicles handle the routes with ease. The distance from Hoogeveen to Borger, where the largest hunebed stands, is around 50 km — an easy morning drive with stops along the way. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Drenthe and the surrounding provinces, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your travel style and group size.

Best time to visit

Drenthe is a rewarding destination from spring right through to autumn. The TT Festival in Assen, held each June around the famous MotoGP race, brings energy and excitement to the province. In September, the Drenthe Fietsvierdaagse cycling event draws thousands of riders through scenic routes. Summer months offer the longest days for exploring heathlands and forests, while spring brings wildflowers across the Dwingelderveld. Campsites throughout Drenthe are generally open from April to October, with the widest choice of pitches in July and August. Booking your campervan through Yescapa during the shoulder months of May or September can offer excellent value, as peer-to-peer pricing tends to be more flexible outside peak weeks.

Home away from home 🫶🏽✨ The whole experience was amazing from start to finish, the van has absolutely everything you need to be off grid and free. Mariana was great to deal with, she checked in along the way to ensure everything was fine with the van. I would recommend this vehicle for a solo traveller as the bed up the top allowed so much space and freedom throughout the travels however the bed below was still comfortable to sleep on if you had 2 people. Would highly recommend renting this van! 10/10 xxx
