Chicago's iconic skyline stretches along 42 km of Lake Michigan shoreline, making it the only major American city where freshwater beaches sit right beside towering architecture. The Art Institute of Chicago houses over 300,000 works, including Grant Wood's famous American Gothic and Georges Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte. Stroll through Millennium Park to see the Cloud Gate sculpture, then head to Navy Pier for lake views and family-friendly attractions. Architecture fans can explore the Chicago Riverwalk, a pedestrian path tracing the Chicago River through the heart of downtown, lined with cafés and boat tour departure points. For green space, Lincoln Park covers 490 hectares on the North Side and includes a free zoo that welcomes over three million visitors each year. Beyond the city, the open roads of Illinois make for easy driving — Milwaukee is just 148 km north, while Indiana Dunes National Park sits only 80 km southeast along the lakeshore. The flat terrain and well-maintained highways around Chicago are ideal for motorhome travel, with wide lanes and straightforward routes in every direction. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from a local owner, giving you insider tips on the best neighbourhoods and routes. Whether you are planning a weekend escape or a longer road trip through the Midwest, picking up a campervan in Chicago puts you at the crossroads of countless adventures.
Chicago shines from May to October, when warm weather opens up the lakefront for exploring by campervan. The Chicago Blues Festival in June fills Grant Park with free live music, while Lollapalooza takes over the same park each August with four days of performances. Summer is the busiest season, so we recommend booking your vehicle on Yescapa well ahead to lock in the best choice from local owners. Autumn brings comfortable driving temperatures and fewer crowds at campsites around the region. Whenever you visit, hiring a motorhome through our peer-to-peer platform often means more competitive pricing than traditional rental agencies.
Chicago is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 80 km southeast from Chicago to Indiana Dunes National Park, where 24 km of sandy Lake Michigan beaches meet towering dunes and oak forests. Stop at West Beach and the Bailly Homestead along the way. Several campsites near the park offer full hook-ups for your campervan.
Drive 90 km southwest from Chicago to Starved Rock State Park, home to 18 canyons carved by glacial meltwater. Hike to St Louis Canyon and Wildcat Canyon for seasonal waterfalls. The park campground has paved pitches suitable for a motorhome, and booking ahead is recommended.
Travel 148 km north from Chicago along the Lake Michigan coast to Milwaukee. Visit the Milwaukee Art Museum with its wing-shaped Quadracci Pavilion, then explore the Historic Third Ward for local food markets. Campervan parking is easy to find at lakefront areas outside the city centre.
Set off 180 km northwest from Chicago to Galena, a beautifully preserved 19th-century mining town. Browse Main Street's independent shops and tour the Ulysses S. Grant Home. The rolling hills of Jo Daviess County offer scenic drives, and local campgrounds welcome motorhomes with spacious pitches.
From Chicago, head 280 km northwest through Madison — home to the Wisconsin State Capitol and the Dane County Farmers' Market — then continue to Door County. This peninsula offers cherry orchards, lighthouses, and Peninsula State Park. Plan five to eight days to enjoy the full route by campervan.
Cover 450 km east from Chicago to Detroit, stopping at Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor along the way. In Detroit, explore the Henry Ford Museum and the Detroit Institute of Arts. Lake Erie's shoreline offers overnight campervan stops with waterfront views and full facilities for longer stays.

The area around Chicago offers a good range of campsites set along lakeshores, in state parks, and amid open countryside. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, water points, and modern shower blocks suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. While there are no campsites within the city itself, the surrounding region has plenty of well-equipped options within an easy drive, letting you enjoy nature without straying too far from Chicago.
Parking a larger vehicle in Chicago requires some planning, as many downtown garages have height restrictions of around 2 metres. Look for open-air lots and surface car parks that can accommodate taller campervans and motorhomes. Overnight street parking for oversized vehicles is generally not permitted in residential areas, so always check posted signs. We recommend arriving early at popular spots near the lakefront to secure a space.
Great experience. Enjoyed the campervan a lot, it was spacious and nice to drive. The owner Diogo was also very helpful and supportive with everything. I recommend
We rented the van for 10 days and had an amazing time! The van isn't isn't new but it's in great mechanical condition and well maintained. We had zero problems and highly recommend!
Carrinha muito viável, confortável e espaçosa. Casa de banho extremamente conviniente. O dono é extremamente simpático e sempre disponível a tirar qualquer dúvida. Experiência a repetir sem dúvida.
We had an outstanding experience renting from Antonio and his family. Antonio and his son Ricardo provided clear, thorough instructions on operating the camper, ensuring we felt confident from the start. Throughout the trip, Ricardo's communication and support were excellent—always responsive and helpful. At the end of the rental, their evaluation was fair, transparent, and reasonable. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a smooth camper rental experience!
Absolutely perfect. The vehicle was exactly as described and equipped with everything necessary for a perfect stay. We had a great time and would love to book it again the next time we are in France 🇫🇷
Amazing trip! I travelled with a friend all around the Dolomites in Nicola's van. It was incredible, it couldn't have gone better. The van is fully equipped with everything you need. We did feel a little cold the first night so we got some blankets at a local shop to upgrade the ones available in the van. The only thing worth mentioning is that the pick-up/drop-off location is a bit inconvenient (relatively far away), but for the price and quality, it's definitely worth it. The hosts were super attentive to everything we needed. Thank you!
