Why choose Chicago for your road trip

Chicago — a city worth exploring

Chicago's iconic skyline stretches along 42 km of Lake Michigan shoreline, making it the only major American city where freshwater beaches sit right beside towering architecture. The Art Institute of Chicago houses over 300,000 works, including Grant Wood's famous American Gothic and Georges Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte. Stroll through Millennium Park to see the Cloud Gate sculpture, then head to Navy Pier for lake views and family-friendly attractions. Architecture fans can explore the Chicago Riverwalk, a pedestrian path tracing the Chicago River through the heart of downtown, lined with cafés and boat tour departure points. For green space, Lincoln Park covers 490 hectares on the North Side and includes a free zoo that welcomes over three million visitors each year. Beyond the city, the open roads of Illinois make for easy driving — Milwaukee is just 148 km north, while Indiana Dunes National Park sits only 80 km southeast along the lakeshore. The flat terrain and well-maintained highways around Chicago are ideal for motorhome travel, with wide lanes and straightforward routes in every direction. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from a local owner, giving you insider tips on the best neighbourhoods and routes. Whether you are planning a weekend escape or a longer road trip through the Midwest, picking up a campervan in Chicago puts you at the crossroads of countless adventures.

Best time to visit

Chicago shines from May to October, when warm weather opens up the lakefront for exploring by campervan. The Chicago Blues Festival in June fills Grant Park with free live music, while Lollapalooza takes over the same park each August with four days of performances. Summer is the busiest season, so we recommend booking your vehicle on Yescapa well ahead to lock in the best choice from local owners. Autumn brings comfortable driving temperatures and fewer crowds at campsites around the region. Whenever you visit, hiring a motorhome through our peer-to-peer platform often means more competitive pricing than traditional rental agencies.

Campsites and parkings for recreational vehicles in Chicago

Recommended campsites

The area around Chicago offers a good range of campsites set along lakeshores, in state parks, and amid open countryside. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, water points, and modern shower blocks suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. While there are no campsites within the city itself, the surrounding region has plenty of well-equipped options within an easy drive, letting you enjoy nature without straying too far from Chicago.

  • Chain O'Lakes State Park Campground Spring Grove (90km northwest)Electric hook-ups, flush toilets, showers, boat launch, picnic areas

Where to park your motorhome

Parking a larger vehicle in Chicago requires some planning, as many downtown garages have height restrictions of around 2 metres. Look for open-air lots and surface car parks that can accommodate taller campervans and motorhomes. Overnight street parking for oversized vehicles is generally not permitted in residential areas, so always check posted signs. We recommend arriving early at popular spots near the lakefront to secure a space.

  • Millennium Park Garage, Adjacent to the city — Underground garage near Cloud Gate and the Art Institute. Height limit of around 2.1 m — suitable for smaller campervans only. Open 24 hours with hourly and daily rates.
  • Navy Pier Parking, 2km northeast — Large open-air lot at Navy Pier with spaces for taller vehicles. Convenient for lakefront attractions and boat tours. Flat daily rate available during peak season.
  • Soldier Field South Lot, 3km south — Spacious surface lot south of Soldier Field, often accommodating larger vehicles on non-event days. Close to the Museum Campus and Lake Shore Drive.

Alles super, Fahrzeug, Vermieter und Ablauf!

We had the best trip with the van "Fiona" we rented by Cuca - the most amazing host. There was no problems with the van, and it was driving great for an old car. The van also had everything we needed like a portabel shower, a sink with running water, a cooler and a much needed parasol. Cuca recommended the best beaches and places, and responded quickly to any questions we had. We cant recommend Cuca and the van enough!
