Why choose Athens for your road trip

Athens — a city worth exploring

Athens has been continuously inhabited for over 7,000 years, making it one of the oldest cities in the world still thriving today. The Acropolis, crowned by the Parthenon built in 447 BC, dominates the skyline and remains the most recognisable landmark in Greece. Below it, the Acropolis Museum houses over 4,000 artefacts spanning centuries of Athenian history. Wander through the Plaka neighbourhood, where neoclassical buildings line narrow pedestrian streets perfect for an afternoon stroll. For a greener escape, the National Garden of Athens offers 15 hectares of shade and calm right in the city centre. History enthusiasts will appreciate the Ancient Agora of Athens, once the heart of public life in classical times. Beyond the city, the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion sits just 69 km to the southeast, while the port city of Piraeus is only 12 km southwest, connecting you to the Greek islands by ferry. Athens is well suited for exploring by road — wide coastal avenues lead south towards the Athenian Riviera, and major motorways head north into mainland Greece. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the Athens area, giving you the freedom to combine city sightseeing with coastal drives and island-hopping adventures at your own pace.

Best time to visit

Athens welcomes visitors warmly throughout the year. Spring is ideal for exploring on foot, with the Athens Open Air Film Festival launching screenings across the city from June. September and October bring comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds, perfect for parking your campervan near the coast. The Athens Authentic Marathon in November retraces the original route from Marathon to the city — a memorable event to witness. Summer is the most popular season, so we recommend booking your motorhome on Yescapa early to secure the best choice from local owners. Winter offers a quieter Athens with mild days suited to cultural exploration and easy access to campsites along the Attic coastline.

Where to park your motorhome

In Athens, motorhomes and campervans follow the same parking rules as cars, but many central streets are narrow and underground car parks often have height restrictions that exclude larger vehicles. Overnight sleeping in a vehicle on public roads is not permitted. Use designated car parks on the city outskirts or near the port, which offer wider bays and often 24-hour access. Park-and-ride facilities at metro stations are a practical option for visiting the centre without driving in.

  • Parking Piraeus Port, 12km southwest — Large car park at Piraeus port with wide bays, 24-hour access and surveillance. A convenient base for island ferry departures.
  • Parking Metro Doukissis Plakentias, 15km northeast — Park-and-ride facility at Doukissis Plakentias metro station with free parking spaces. Direct metro connection to central Athens in around 30 minutes.
  • Parking Faliro (Stavros Niarchos), 5km south — Car park at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Faliro with wide bays and parkland. Tram connection to central Athens.

We had a truly wonderful experience with Tobia and his motorhome. The vehicle was in perfect condition, practically like new, very clean, comfortable, and extremely well maintained. It was the perfect companion for our summer family trip and gave us everything we needed for a fantastic camping experience. From even before the pick-up, communication with Tobia was excellent. He was always responsive, helpful, and genuinely did his best to solve any issues, provide us with all the information we needed, and take our particular situation into consideration. We really appreciated his kindness and flexibility throughout the whole rental. The motorhome itself was very comfortable to drive and surprisingly fuel-efficient, which was a big plus during our long trip. We spent several weeks travelling with it as a family, and it truly made our summer holiday very special and memorable. I would highly recommend both Tobia and this motorhome to anyone looking for a reliable, comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. We would definitely choose this motorhome again for our next trip. Thank you, Tobia, for helping make our family holiday such a great experience!
