Why choose Amsterdam for your road trip

Amsterdam — a city worth exploring

Amsterdam's canal ring, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010, stretches over 100 kilometres of waterways lined with 1,550 monumental buildings. The city rewards those who explore it at their own pace, from the world-renowned Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank House to the sprawling Vondelpark and the colourful Albert Cuyp Market. The NDSM Wharf, a former shipyard turned creative hub on the northern bank of the IJ, offers street art, festivals, and waterfront dining — easily reached by a free ferry from Centraal Station. Just 36 km south-west, Haarlem charms with its medieval centre and Frans Hals Museum, while the Zaanse Schans windmill village sits only 18 km north-west, making both ideal day trips. Amsterdam's flat terrain and well-signed roads are a joy for campervan travellers, though the compact city centre is best accessed on foot or by bike once you have parked up. Surrounding areas like Waterland and Amstelveen provide quieter overnight spots with easy access to the centre. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the Amsterdam region, choosing a motorhome or campervan that fits your plans — and often picking up your vehicle right in the neighbourhood where your adventure begins.

Best time to visit

Amsterdam welcomes visitors warmly throughout the year. King's Day on 27 April fills the city with orange-clad celebrations and open-air markets — book your campervan early for this iconic weekend. The Holland Festival in June brings world-class performing arts to venues across the city. Summer months offer long daylight hours ideal for cycling along the canals and exploring nearby beaches at Zandvoort. Autumn and winter bring a cosier atmosphere, with the Amsterdam Light Festival illuminating the waterways from November to January. Yescapa's peer-to-peer model means competitive hire rates even during popular periods, with local owners offering flexible pick-up options across Amsterdam.

Where to park your motorhome

Parking a motorhome or campervan in central Amsterdam requires some planning, as the city centre has height and length restrictions on many streets. Overnight parking in public spaces is generally not permitted within the A10 ring road. The best approach is to use dedicated facilities on the outskirts and travel into the centre by public transport. P+R (Park and Ride) sites offer affordable day rates and are connected to metro and tram lines.

  • P+R Zeeburg, 5km east — Located near the A10 ring road with tram connection to the city centre. Suitable for larger vehicles with generous bay sizes.
  • P+R Sloterdijk, 7km west — Adjacent to Sloterdijk station with train, metro, and bus connections. Offers day parking with easy access to the A10 and A5 motorways.
  • P+R Johan Cruijff ArenA, 10km southeast — Large facility near the ArenA with metro access to Centraal Station in 15 minutes. Height clearance accommodates most motorhomes.
  • Camperpark Amsterdam, 6km north — Dedicated campervan and motorhome parking in Amsterdam-Noord. Offers electric hook-ups, water, and waste disposal. A short free ferry ride to Centraal Station.

It was our 1st time in a Caravan, and we feel very fortunate that we have done it with Jeremy & Annabella, their Caravan is exactly as decribed in the pictures, in a perfect mechanical situation, we had 0 problens through the whole joirney, and we were 6 people in that Caravan, I have no doubt that we will reserve it again in the future. The check in and out went completely smoove with Jeremy, you can feel free to trust them!

Great, responsible, and responsive owner. Van is equipped as advertised. The refrigerator loses its battery fast when van is turned off, so it caused some issues overnight in hot weather. Cars engine is a bit weak when driving uphill, but never caused any real issues. Great choice if you want a small van for exploring towns and coast of Andalusia.

Absolutely recommended renter. Really kind and nice people. They gave back the van clean in and out, so big respect to you guys. Thanks for your rent.

Very nice camper that has a lot of comfort for travelling Mallorca. One star less due toSlow/difficult communication with the owner, who only started to confirm our messages/questions 1 day before the actual start of the trip, The fact that the agreed pick-up time was not respected (and not communicated before we arrived on the airport) and got delayed with 1,5 h.Do know that towels and linnen are available in the camper (or they were at least for us), so no need to bring them.

Fantastic experience renting Dirk’s camper van! Pick-up and drop-off were exactly as we wished—very flexible both in time and location, which we really appreciated. The van was perfect for four adults: spacious, spotlessly clean, and excellently equipped with everything we needed and more. It was also very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. Dirk provided a very handy e-book with all the essential information about the van, which made everything even easier.A pure pleasure from beginning to end—we would definitely rent from Dirk again!

Sandro and gus were on hand to help with any issues that arose. Loads of power for the steep windy roads, the van was well equiped and comfortable . An extra blanket for parking at altetude was apreciated as it was cooler up the hills. Shower worked but not much hot water. We had a small scrape with another car and insurance sorted the third party but we lost some of our deposit to repair van. Sandro was very helpfull and there was no dramas. So maybe paying for comprehensive insurance would be a better plan in future.
