Why choose Donostia for your road trip

Donostia — a city worth exploring

Donostia-San Sebastián sits along the Bay of Biscay, framed by Monte Urgull and Monte Igueldo, with La Concha beach consistently ranked among the finest urban beaches in Europe. The city's Old Town, or Parte Vieja, packs more bars per square metre than almost anywhere else on the continent, making it the heartland of pintxos culture. Wander through the San Telmo Museoa, a former Dominican convent turned cultural museum, or take the funicular up Monte Igueldo for sweeping views of the coastline. The Kursaal Congress Centre, designed by Rafael Moneo, anchors the Zurriola district with its translucent glass cubes. Bilbao lies just 100 km to the west, while the French border town of Hendaye is only 20 km to the northeast, opening up cross-border touring with ease. The coastal roads around Donostia wind through green hills and clifftop stretches, so allow extra time and enjoy the scenery rather than rushing between stops. Hiring a campervan or motorhome through Yescapa connects you with local owners in the Basque Country who know the best routes and overnight spots. A campervan gives you the freedom to chase the next pintxo bar, surf break, or quiet cove at your own pace — and with Donostia as your starting point, every direction leads somewhere memorable.

Best time to visit

Donostia comes alive in summer, with the San Sebastián International Film Festival drawing global attention every September and the Semana Grande festivities lighting up the city each August with fireworks, concerts, and street events. Campervan travellers will find the period from June to September ideal, with long daylight hours and warm conditions for coastal drives. Book early through Yescapa for July and August, as these are the most popular months. Spring and autumn bring quieter roads and pleasant temperatures, perfect for exploring at a relaxed pace. Even winter has its charm — Donostia's pintxo bars are busiest on cool evenings, and motorhome hire rates tend to be lower, making it a great time for a food-focused getaway.

Donostia is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Donostia to Getaria

50km west 1–3 days

Head 50 km west along the coastal GI-3440 to Getaria, birthplace of Juan Sebastián Elcano. Stop at Zarautz for its long surf beach and seafront campervan parking. In Getaria, visit the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museoa and enjoy grilled turbot at the harbour. The road hugs the cliffs, so take it steady and savour the views.

Donostia to Oñati

55km south 1–4 days

Drive 55 km south into the Basque interior to reach Oñati, home to the Renaissance Universidad de Sancti Spiritus. Nearby, the Arantzazu Sanctuary sits dramatically in a gorge. The Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park offers walking trails through beech forests. Motorhome parking is available at the town entrance — a peaceful base for exploring the highlands.

Donostia to Bilbao

100km west 3–6 days

Cover 100 km west to Bilbao, stopping at Guernica and its Peace Museum along the way. In Bilbao, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Casco Viejo are essential visits. Cross the Vizcaya Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage transporter bridge. Campervan parking is well signposted near the riverfront — plan two full days to explore the city properly.

Donostia to Biarritz and Bayonne

160km northeast 3–6 days

Cross into France and travel 160 km northeast through the Basque coast. Surf at Biarritz's Grande Plage, then explore the Cité de l'Océan museum. Continue to Bayonne for its Gothic cathedral and chocolate-making heritage. Several well-equipped campsites line the coast between both towns, making this a comfortable motorhome route.

Donostia to Vitoria-Gasteiz and Rioja Alavesa

180km southwest 4–7 days

Head 180 km southwest to Vitoria-Gasteiz, the Basque capital, and its striking Catedral de Santa María. Continue south into Rioja Alavesa, where Laguardia offers medieval streets and underground wine cellars. Visit the Marqués de Riscal winery designed by Frank Gehry. Campervan-friendly parking areas are available near most bodegas — book tastings in advance.

Donostia to the Pyrenees and Pamplona

250km southeast 5–8 days

Travel 250 km southeast through Navarre to reach the western Pyrenees. Stop in Pamplona to walk the Casco Antiguo and visit the Ciudadela. Continue to the Irati Forest, one of Europe's largest beech-fir woodlands, and the Roncesvalles pass on the Camino de Santiago. Mountain roads are well maintained but winding — a motorhome under 7 m is recommended for the narrower stretches.

It was our first time traveling with a camper, and renting this one for our trip around Mallorca turned out to be an absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience that exceeded all our expectations. The camper was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Everything was well-maintained and thoughtfully equipped, which made our first camper trip easy and enjoyable. Communication with Gustavo was excellent from start to finish. He always responded very quickly, was friendly and helpful, and made the whole process smooth and stress-free. He also shared some fantastic recommendations for places to visit and park around the island, which made our trip even better. We couldn't have asked for a better first camper experience and would highly recommend both the camper and Gustavo to anyone planning a trip to Mallorca. We would happily rent it again in the future!

It was perfect. The owner is a very nice guy who picked us up from Funchal to get to Machico and explained everything about the car. The car included everything that was needed for our roadtrip. The tent is spacious and the amenities were of good quality. Overall it was an amazing experience to enjoy the island this way!
