Why choose Cologne for your road trip

Cologne — a city worth exploring

Köln's iconic Dom cathedral took 632 years to complete and stands 157 metres tall, making it Germany's most visited landmark with over six million visitors each year. The city sits on both banks of the Rhine, offering a mix of Roman heritage, modern art and lively neighbourhoods that reward slow exploration. Wander through the Römisch-Germanisches Museum to see ancient mosaics, then cross the Hohenzollernbrücke — famous for its thousands of love locks — to reach the right-bank district of Deutz. The Museum Ludwig houses one of Europe's largest collections of Pop Art, while the Flora und Botanischer Garten provides a peaceful green escape near the city centre. Bonn lies just 30 km to the south, perfect for a day trip to Beethoven's birthplace, and Düsseldorf is only 40 km north along the Rhine corridor. The flat terrain along the river makes driving a motorhome straightforward, with well-maintained roads and clear signage throughout the region. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners in the Köln area, which means flexible pick-up points across different neighbourhoods and honest tips about where to go. With a campervan as your base, you can park up along the Rhine, explore Köln's Altstadt on foot, and head out to the surrounding countryside whenever the mood strikes.

Best time to visit

Köln truly comes alive during the Karneval season, which kicks off in November and peaks with street parades on Rosenmontag in February or March — book your campervan early, as the city fills up fast. Summer brings the Kölner Lichter fireworks festival in July, when the Rhine lights up and riverside campsites are in high demand. Spring and autumn are ideal for relaxed touring, with mild temperatures and quieter roads around Köln. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often makes hiring outside peak months even more affordable, giving you more flexibility to explore at your own pace.

65km east 1–4 days

Around 65 km east, the Bergisches Land region offers green hills and reservoirs. The Müngsten Bridge, Germany's highest railway bridge, and the historic old town of Solingen-Gräfrath are well worth a visit. Campsites near the Bever Reservoir provide quiet motorhome pitches surrounded by nature.

Cologne to the Middle Rhine Valley

120km south 3–6 days

The UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley stretches 120 km south between Koblenz and Bingen. Drive your campervan past the Loreley rock, Marksburg Castle and countless wine villages. What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Cologne

Great camper with all the necessary bits to enjoy off grid or plug in. Naiara and Miguel were very helpful and managed to communicate well with us, even though we didn't speak Spanish. They were extremely kind and considerate throughout the trip and responded quickly to any messages or queries. Llanes is a beautiful place to start your journey- we went up to Somiedo, in the mountains, and then spent a few days back by the sea.

If you’re looking for the perfect camper van, look no further! Sylvia’s van exceeded all of our expectations. It was spotless, incredibly comfortable, and equipped with absolutely everything we could possibly need. You can immediately tell how much care and attention Sylvia puts into making sure her guests have the best possible experience. What really made the difference was Sylvia herself. She was exceptionally kind, welcoming, and always quick to respond, making us feel supported from the moment we booked until the end of our trip. Thanks to her amazing van, we had an unforgettable adventure and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We would happily rent from Sylvia again and recommend her without hesitation to anyone looking for a reliable host and a fantastic camper van.

I loved tripping around the island with this van. It is equipped with many accessories as described, and some basic food condiments to get you started. Sleeping was comfortable, and handling the van itself too!

We had a fantastic trip in Joao's campervan. It was fully equipped with everything we needed. Every window has a mosquito screen, making it very easy to ventilate the van. It is also a very pleasant and reliable vehicle; we had no trouble driving up steep roads. It is an excellent campervan for 'off-grid' travel, as it comes with hot water, a large fridge, a toilet, ample water, and a large gas supply. We also never had any issues with the electricity, thanks to the solar panel. All windows can be blacked out at night. We highly recommend Joao's campervan. Communication was smooth throughout, too! Thank you very much!
