Why choose Cologne for your road trip

Cologne — a city worth exploring

Köln's iconic Dom cathedral took 632 years to complete and stands 157 metres tall, making it Germany's most visited landmark with over six million visitors each year. The city sits on both banks of the Rhine, offering a mix of Roman heritage, modern art and lively neighbourhoods that reward slow exploration. Wander through the Römisch-Germanisches Museum to see ancient mosaics, then cross the Hohenzollernbrücke — famous for its thousands of love locks — to reach the right-bank district of Deutz. The Museum Ludwig houses one of Europe's largest collections of Pop Art, while the Flora und Botanischer Garten provides a peaceful green escape near the city centre. Bonn lies just 30 km to the south, perfect for a day trip to Beethoven's birthplace, and Düsseldorf is only 40 km north along the Rhine corridor. The flat terrain along the river makes driving a motorhome straightforward, with well-maintained roads and clear signage throughout the region. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners in the Köln area, which means flexible pick-up points across different neighbourhoods and honest tips about where to go. With a campervan as your base, you can park up along the Rhine, explore Köln's Altstadt on foot, and head out to the surrounding countryside whenever the mood strikes.

Best time to visit

Köln truly comes alive during the Karneval season, which kicks off in November and peaks with street parades on Rosenmontag in February or March — book your campervan early, as the city fills up fast. Summer brings the Kölner Lichter fireworks festival in July, when the Rhine lights up and riverside campsites are in high demand. Spring and autumn are ideal for relaxed touring, with mild temperatures and quieter roads around Köln. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often makes hiring outside peak months even more affordable, giving you more flexibility to explore at your own pace.

Top getaways from Cologne

Cologne is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Köln to Bonn and the Siebengebirge

80km southeast 1–4 days

Drive 30 km south to Bonn to visit the Beethoven-Haus and the Bundeskunsthalle, then continue into the Siebengebirge hills. Climb the Drachenfels for panoramic Rhine views and explore Königswinter's old town below. Motorhome-friendly parking is available at the foot of the Drachenfels, and riverside pitches dot the route.

Köln to Sauerland

120km east 3–6 days

Travel 120 km east from Köln into the Sauerland, a region of forested hills and reservoirs. Stop at the Atta Cave near Attendorn, paddle on the Biggesee lake, and hike trails around Winterberg. Campervan pitches with hook-ups are plentiful around the lakes, and the winding roads through the valleys are well-surfaced for larger vehicles.

Köln to Brühl

60km south 1–3 days

Head 20 km south from Köln to Brühl, home to the UNESCO-listed Augustusburg Palace and the Falkenlust hunting lodge. Spend a morning exploring the baroque gardens, then treat the family to an afternoon at Phantasialand theme park. Campervan parking is available near the palace grounds, making this an easy overnight stop.

Köln to Maastricht and South Limburg

150km northwest 3–6 days

Cross into the Netherlands 150 km northwest of Köln and discover Maastricht's Vrijthof square and the underground Marl Caves of Valkenburg. Sample local Limburgse vlaai pastries and cycle the rolling hills of South Limburg. Campsites with full facilities are easy to find around Valkenburg, and the cross-border drive is motorway all the way.

Köln to the Moselle Valley

250km south 5–8 days

Follow the Rhine south from Köln for 180 km, then turn west into the Moselle Valley. Visit Cochem's Reichsburg castle, taste Riesling in Bernkastel-Kues, and walk the vineyards above Traben-Trarbach. Motorhome stellplätze line the riverbanks in most villages, and the gentle valley roads are a pleasure to drive at a relaxed pace.

Köln to Luxembourg and the Eifel

320km southwest 5–8 days

Head 320 km southwest from Köln through the volcanic Eifel region to Luxembourg City. Hike around the Laacher See crater lake, explore the Nürburgring circuit, and finish with a stroll through Luxembourg's Casemates du Bock. Campervan-friendly aires and stellplätze are well-spaced along the route, so you can stop wherever the landscape calls.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Cologne

We had a great Motorhome Experience in the Dordogne area in France! Guy’s motorhome had everything we needed for a comfortable and adventurous stay. A great kingsize bed (for a motorhome anyway…) and large fridge, warm water, heating everything is there. If you’re looking for a reliable modern motorhome rental , we highly recommend renting Guy’s motorhome. Marian & Wim.

It was our first time traveling with a camper, and renting this one for our trip around Mallorca turned out to be an absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience that exceeded all our expectations. The camper was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Everything was well-maintained and thoughtfully equipped, which made our first camper trip easy and enjoyable. Communication with Gustavo was excellent from start to finish. He always responded very quickly, was friendly and helpful, and made the whole process smooth and stress-free. He also shared some fantastic recommendations for places to visit and park around the island, which made our trip even better. We couldn't have asked for a better first camper experience and would highly recommend both the camper and Gustavo to anyone planning a trip to Mallorca. We would happily rent it again in the future!

It was perfect. The owner is a very nice guy who picked us up from Funchal to get to Machico and explained everything about the car. The car included everything that was needed for our roadtrip. The tent is spacious and the amenities were of good quality. Overall it was an amazing experience to enjoy the island this way!
