Köln's iconic Dom cathedral took 632 years to complete and stands 157 metres tall, making it Germany's most visited landmark with over six million visitors each year. The city sits on both banks of the Rhine, offering a mix of Roman heritage, modern art and lively neighbourhoods that reward slow exploration. Wander through the Römisch-Germanisches Museum to see ancient mosaics, then cross the Hohenzollernbrücke — famous for its thousands of love locks — to reach the right-bank district of Deutz. The Museum Ludwig houses one of Europe's largest collections of Pop Art, while the Flora und Botanischer Garten provides a peaceful green escape near the city centre. Bonn lies just 30 km to the south, perfect for a day trip to Beethoven's birthplace, and Düsseldorf is only 40 km north along the Rhine corridor. The flat terrain along the river makes driving a motorhome straightforward, with well-maintained roads and clear signage throughout the region. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners in the Köln area, which means flexible pick-up points across different neighbourhoods and honest tips about where to go. With a campervan as your base, you can park up along the Rhine, explore Köln's Altstadt on foot, and head out to the surrounding countryside whenever the mood strikes.
Köln truly comes alive during the Karneval season, which kicks off in November and peaks with street parades on Rosenmontag in February or March — book your campervan early, as the city fills up fast. Summer brings the Kölner Lichter fireworks festival in July, when the Rhine lights up and riverside campsites are in high demand. Spring and autumn are ideal for relaxed touring, with mild temperatures and quieter roads around Köln. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often makes hiring outside peak months even more affordable, giving you more flexibility to explore at your own pace.
Cologne is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Just 30 km south, Bonn is Germany's former capital. Visit the Haus der Geschichte and Beethoven's birthplace on Bonngasse. Riverside parking areas offer views of the Siebengebirge hills. The B9 along the Rhine is wide and well-suited for campervan travel, making this a relaxed short trip.
Around 65 km east, the Bergisches Land region offers green hills and reservoirs. The Müngsten Bridge, Germany's highest railway bridge, and the historic old town of Solingen-Gräfrath are well worth a visit. Campsites near the Bever Reservoir provide quiet motorhome pitches surrounded by nature.
The UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley stretches 120 km south between Koblenz and Bingen. Drive your campervan past the Loreley rock, Marksburg Castle and countless wine villages. Bacharach and Oberwesel offer dedicated motorhome pitches right on the Rhine. The B9 and B42 on both sides of the river are well maintained.
Head 180 km west to the Belgian-Dutch border region. Maastricht charms with the Dominicanen bookshop inside a former church and the Bonnefanten Museum. Continue to Liège and climb the 374 steps of the Montagne de Bueren. Campsites along the Meuse river offer good pitches for your campervan, and border crossings are hassle-free.
Around 250 km south-east, Heidelberg awaits with its famous castle and Germany's oldest university. From there, continue into the Black Forest, where the Schwarzwaldhochstraße offers spectacular views. Visit Triberg and its waterfalls, then head to Lake Titisee. Motorhome pitches are well signposted along the route, making navigation straightforward.
Hamburg lies 300 km north, and the route passes through Münster with its Prinzipalmarkt and Schloss. Further north, the Teufelsmoor near Worpswede offers a unique moorland landscape. In Hamburg, explore the Speicherstadt warehouse district and the Elbphilharmonie. Campervan pitches are available at rest stops and in towns along the way.

Around Cologne, you will find a good selection of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Sites along the Rhine offer electric hook-ups, sanitary facilities and Wi-Fi. In the surrounding area, campsites in the Bergisches Land and along the Erft river provide nature-oriented pitches with walking trails nearby. Many sites include waste disposal stations and accessible facilities.
Cologne offers several parking areas suitable for motorhomes and campervans. Be aware of height restrictions in multi-storey car parks – many are limited to 2.00 m. For larger vehicles, designated motorhome parking areas on the outskirts are a better option. Overnight parking on public car parks is generally not permitted in Cologne, so use official sites with overnight permission. The city's low-emission zone requires a green environmental sticker.
Aconselho vivamente.
Perfect vehicle and great host. We have visited Asturias and Cantabria and their campervan is just the perfect buddy to travel with.
Gracias chicos
