Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Croatia

Croatia — a country worth exploring

Croatia's Adriatic coastline stretches over 1,770 kilometres, dotted with more than 1,200 islands, making it one of Europe's most rewarding destinations for a road trip on four wheels. Start in the capital Zagreb and head south towards Split, a journey of around 410 km that takes you through rolling hills and past the Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its 16 terraced lakes connected by waterfalls. From Split, the coastal road to Dubrovnik covers roughly 230 km, hugging cliffsides with views across the Adriatic Sea. Along the way, stop at the medieval walled town of Trogir, the oyster beds of Ston, and the lush Pelješac Peninsula, where local vineyards produce some of the country's finest red wines. Inland, the Istrian Peninsula offers truffle-rich forests, hilltop villages like Motovun, and Roman ruins in Pula, including a remarkably preserved amphitheatre. Croatia's roads are generally well-maintained, though some coastal stretches are narrow and winding — ideal for a campervan rather than a larger vehicle. Motorhome travellers will find plenty of spacious campsites near major towns. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Croatia, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your route and group size. This peer-to-peer approach often means more flexible pick-up points and competitive pricing, so you can spend more time exploring and less time planning logistics.

Best time to visit

May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip in Croatia, with long daylight hours and warm seas ideal for swimming. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival runs from mid-July to late August, filling the old town with open-air theatre and music. In September, Istria hosts the Subotina truffle festival near Buzet, celebrating the region's white truffle season. Spring and early autumn offer quieter roads and milder temperatures, perfect for exploring national parks. Summer is the most popular season, so booking your motorhome on Yescapa early gives you the widest choice of vehicles from local owners at fair peer-to-peer rates.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Croatia

Croatia's motorway network connects Zagreb to the coast efficiently, with the A1 running south to Split and the A6 heading west to Rijeka. Tolls apply on most motorways and can be paid in cash or by card at toll booths. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes fall into a higher toll category, so keep your vehicle weight in mind. The speed limit on motorways is 130 km/h for cars but 90 km/h for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. Coastal roads like the D8 Adriatic Highway are toll-free but narrower, with frequent bends and limited overtaking opportunities — allow extra time if driving a larger vehicle.

No tenemos ninguna pega.

My partner and I hired this van for a week in the Dolomites, the vehicle has a lot of character and a homely feel. Dusan, the owner’s, communication was very good and thorough. He took the time to go through and explain the vehicles functions really well prior to our journey. If we had any problems at all Dusan was very quick to respond. The vehicle drives really well and has all of the facilities required to live comfortably. We cooked each day in the van and enjoyed the spacious interior to relax of an evening. There is plenty of space inside the van and would be suitable for a couple on holidays or a small family. We would recommend this van to anyone that is planning on road tripping through north Italy.
