Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Ireland

Ireland — a country worth exploring

Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way stretches 2,500 kilometres along the western seaboard, making it one of the longest defined coastal driving routes in the world. From the dramatic Cliffs of Moher in County Clare to the ancient monastic settlement of Skellig Michael off the Kerry coast, the country packs an extraordinary range of landscapes into a relatively compact area. Dublin to Galway is roughly 210 kilometres, while Cork to Killarney covers about 85 kilometres — both manageable day drives that open up entirely different scenery. Rolling green countryside gives way to rugged Atlantic headlands, and narrow country lanes connect charming villages where you can park up and explore on foot. Ireland's well-maintained national roads make it easy to cover ground, though many of the most rewarding routes follow smaller regional roads where a campervan is the ideal way to travel at your own pace. Whether you want to trace the Ring of Kerry, wander through the Burren's limestone karst landscape, or discover the lakes of Connemara, having your own vehicle means total flexibility. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners based across Ireland, giving you a wide choice of vehicles and pick-up points to match your itinerary perfectly.

Best time to visit

Ireland is a wonderful destination from spring right through to autumn. May and June bring long daylight hours and wildflowers across the Burren, while September offers quieter roads and golden light along the coast. The Galway International Arts Festival in July draws visitors from around the world, and the Puck Fair in Killorglin each August is one of Ireland's oldest traditional gatherings. Campsite availability is best when you book ahead for July and August, the most popular months. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often means better value compared to traditional hire, especially outside peak weeks. For a relaxed trip with mild temperatures and fewer fellow travellers, late spring and early autumn are ideal for exploring by campervan.

The best road trips in Ireland

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Wild Atlantic Way — Northern Section

600 km 7–11 days

This 600-kilometre stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way runs from Galway past the Cliffs of Moher and Sligo up to Donegal in Ireland's far north-west. Visit Strandhill beach, the table-top mountain of Benbulbin, and the remote bays of Donegal. Campsites and overnight spots are well spaced along the route. A campervan is especially practical on the narrow coastal roads of this section.

The Grand Ireland Circuit

800 km 10–15 days

This 800-kilometre route circles the island, connecting Dublin, Cork, Killarney, Galway, Sligo, and Belfast. You will pass through the Wicklow Mountains, the West Cork coastline, the Wild Atlantic Way, and the Antrim coast. Plan stops at Glendalough, the Rock of Cashel, and the Giant's Causeway. The route suits both motorhomes and campervans, with campsites available in every region of Ireland.

The Ring of Kerry Loop

180 km 3–6 days

The Ring of Kerry covers roughly 180 kilometres through County Kerry in south-west Ireland. Start in Killarney, pass through Kenmare and Waterville, and catch views of the Skellig Islands from the coast. The route suits a campervan well, as some stretches are narrow. Campsites are dotted along the way for convenient overnight stops.

The Causeway Coastal Route

250 km 3–6 days

This 250-kilometre route runs from Belfast along the Antrim coast in Northern Ireland to Derry. Along the way, visit the Giant's Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, and the Dark Hedges. The road is well maintained and suitable for a motorhome. Plenty of lay-bys and car parks offer sea-view breaks along this memorable stretch of Ireland.

The Connemara and Burren Crossing

350 km 5–8 days

Covering around 350 kilometres, this route links Galway with Connemara National Park and the Burren in County Clare. Stop at Kylemore Abbey, hike through the Twelve Bens, and explore the karst landscape of the Burren. The mix of coastline and limestone terrain makes this one of Ireland's most varied drives. A campervan handles the narrow western roads with ease.

The South Coast Discovery Route

400 km 5–8 days

This 400-kilometre route takes you from Cork through Kinsale and Clonakilty to Mizen Head — Ireland's most southerly point — then back via Bantry and the Healy Pass. Expect fishing villages, sandy beaches, and the fortress ruins of Charles Fort. Roads are well surfaced, and campsites with pitches for both campervans and motorhomes are plentiful along the south coast.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Ireland

Ireland has no toll system for motorways in the traditional vignette sense, but several major routes charge per-use tolls, including the M50 around Dublin which uses barrier-free eTag or video tolling. The M1, M4, and M6 also have toll plazas. Speed limits on motorways are 120 km/h for cars, but vehicles over 3,500 kg are limited to 80 km/h on all roads. Most Irish motorways are dual carriageway with two lanes each direction. Outside the main corridors, national secondary roads (N-roads) are generally well surfaced but can be narrow in rural areas — worth noting if you are driving a larger motorhome. Rest areas and service stations are spaced along major routes, though less frequent on regional roads.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Ireland

Great camper with all the necessary bits to enjoy off grid or plug in. Naiara and Miguel were very helpful and managed to communicate well with us, even though we didn't speak Spanish. They were extremely kind and considerate throughout the trip and responded quickly to any messages or queries. Llanes is a beautiful place to start your journey- we went up to Somiedo, in the mountains, and then spent a few days back by the sea.

If you’re looking for the perfect camper van, look no further! Sylvia’s van exceeded all of our expectations. It was spotless, incredibly comfortable, and equipped with absolutely everything we could possibly need. You can immediately tell how much care and attention Sylvia puts into making sure her guests have the best possible experience. What really made the difference was Sylvia herself. She was exceptionally kind, welcoming, and always quick to respond, making us feel supported from the moment we booked until the end of our trip. Thanks to her amazing van, we had an unforgettable adventure and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We would happily rent from Sylvia again and recommend her without hesitation to anyone looking for a reliable host and a fantastic camper van.

I loved tripping around the island with this van. It is equipped with many accessories as described, and some basic food condiments to get you started. Sleeping was comfortable, and handling the van itself too!

We had a fantastic trip in Joao's campervan. It was fully equipped with everything we needed. Every window has a mosquito screen, making it very easy to ventilate the van. It is also a very pleasant and reliable vehicle; we had no trouble driving up steep roads. It is an excellent campervan for 'off-grid' travel, as it comes with hot water, a large fridge, a toilet, ample water, and a large gas supply. We also never had any issues with the electricity, thanks to the solar panel. All windows can be blacked out at night. We highly recommend Joao's campervan. Communication was smooth throughout, too! Thank you very much!
