Why hire a campervan or motorhome in South France

South France — a region worth exploring

The Canal du Midi, a 240-kilometre UNESCO World Heritage waterway completed in 1681, threads through the heart of Southern France and offers one of Europe's most memorable drives alongside its tree-lined banks. This vast region stretches from the Camargue wetlands near the Rhône delta to the dramatic Gorges du Verdon, often called Europe's Grand Canyon, and west to the walled city of Carcassonne. The distance from Montpellier to Nice covers roughly 330 kilometres along the Mediterranean coast, while heading inland from Toulouse to the Millau Viaduct is about 180 kilometres through rolling countryside. Southern France rewards slow travel — narrow roads wind through lavender fields in Provence, climb into the Cévennes mountains, and drop down to sandy beaches along the Languedoc shore. Coastal routes suit campervans perfectly, while larger motorhomes have plenty of well-maintained aires and spacious campsites across the Occitanie and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regions. With Yescapa, you can rent directly from local owners spread across Southern France, choosing from a wide range of vehicles that match your group size and travel style. Whether you want to explore the Pont du Gard, wander through the ochre villages of the Luberon, or park up near the turquoise waters of Cassis, peer-to-peer sharing means competitive prices and personal recommendations from people who know the region best.

Best time to visit

Southern France is a year-round destination for campervan travel, with each season offering something distinct. May and June bring warm days ideal for driving through Provence's lavender fields, which bloom spectacularly around Valensole from mid-June. Summer is the most popular season — book early on Yescapa to secure the best choice of vehicles from local owners. The Festival d'Avignon in July fills the city with theatre and performance, while September's grape harvest across Languedoc vineyards makes autumn a rewarding time to hire a campervan and explore at a relaxed pace. Mild winters along the Côte d'Azur keep coastal routes enjoyable even in December.

The best road trips in South France

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Lavender Route

220 km 3–6 days

Start in Aix-en-Provence and drive north through the Luberon to the Valensole plateau, where lavender fields stretch to the horizon from June to August. Stop at Gordes, one of Provence's most photogenic perched villages, and visit the Sénanque Abbey. Campervan-friendly parking is available at most villages along this Southern France loop.

The Cathar Castles Trail

180 km 3–5 days

Loop from Carcassonne through the rugged Corbières hills to discover the clifftop fortresses of Peyrepertuse and Quéribus in Southern France. The narrow mountain roads suit campervans well, and you can overnight at small municipal campsites in villages like Cucugnan. A compact route packed with medieval history and wild landscapes.

The Verdon and Riviera Drive

350 km 5–8 days

From Nice, head west to the Gorges du Verdon and its turquoise lake, Lac de Sainte-Croix. Continue through Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, a ceramic-making village tucked between cliffs, before looping back via Grasse and the coastal road through Antibes. Motorhomes should note some Verdon roads have width limits — check your vehicle size before setting off on this Southern France adventure.

The Languedoc Wine Circuit

400 km 5–8 days

Drive from Montpellier through the vineyards of Pic Saint-Loup, then south to the coastal town of Sète and its lively fish market. Continue west past the Étang de Thau to Béziers and Minerve, a dramatic village perched above a river gorge. This Southern France route has excellent campervan aires near most wine-producing villages, making it easy to stop and taste along the way.

The Mediterranean Coast Road

550 km 7–11 days

Follow the coastline from Perpignan to Marseille, passing through Narbonne, the flamingo-filled lagoons of the Camargue, and the seaside town of Cassis with its dramatic calanques. Detour inland to Arles for Roman ruins and the Pont du Gard aqueduct. This long Southern France route suits both campervans and motorhomes, with well-equipped campsites dotted along the entire Mediterranean shore.

The Grand Southern France Loop

600 km 8–15 days

Begin in Toulouse and head east through Albi's red-brick cathedral quarter, then climb to the Millau Viaduct before descending into the Cévennes National Park. Cross into Provence via the Mont Ventoux area, reach Avignon, and return west through Nîmes and Carcassonne. A motorhome-friendly route with spacious aires and campsites throughout, covering the full breadth of Southern France's diverse landscapes.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in South France

Most motorways in Southern France are toll roads (autoroutes à péage). The A9 along the Mediterranean coast and the A7 heading south through the Rhône Valley both require toll payments, which can be made by card or cash at booths, or via a Liber-t electronic tag. Motorhomes and campervans over 3.5 tonnes are classified as Class 2 vehicles, meaning higher toll fees. Speed limits for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes are 130 km/h on motorways and 110 km/h on dual carriageways, while those over 3.5 tonnes must keep to 110 km/h and 100 km/h respectively. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome parking are well spaced along major routes, typically every 30 to 50 kilometres.

incredibly friendly and took the time to explain how everything worked, making the whole experience easy and enjoyable from the start. The camper van was a pleasure to drive and came fully equipped with everything we could possibly need. He was also available 24/7 to help with any questions and recommended some amazing routes around the island. As first-time camper van travellers, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience, and we would absolutely do it again. It was truly an unforgettable adventure.

The camper was exactly as expected, it was clean and everything worked as it should. It drove well and was surprisingly economical considering its size. The booking process was easy but collection gave a few challenges. The renters location is wrong in the listing as there are two Sauzets in south west France. Coupled with the renter mistakenly not delivering the camper to the correct address meant we were a day late starting our trip. A refund for the missing day was immediately agreed. In all an easy experience once the pickup location was cleared up.
