The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
The Canal du Midi, a 240-kilometre UNESCO World Heritage waterway completed in 1681, threads through the heart of Southern France and offers one of Europe's most memorable drives alongside its tree-lined banks. This vast region stretches from the Camargue wetlands near the Rhône delta to the dramatic Gorges du Verdon, often called Europe's Grand Canyon, and west to the walled city of Carcassonne. The distance from Montpellier to Nice covers roughly 330 kilometres along the Mediterranean coast, while heading inland from Toulouse to the Millau Viaduct is about 180 kilometres through rolling countryside. Southern France rewards slow travel — narrow roads wind through lavender fields in Provence, climb into the Cévennes mountains, and drop down to sandy beaches along the Languedoc shore. Coastal routes suit campervans perfectly, while larger motorhomes have plenty of well-maintained aires and spacious campsites across the Occitanie and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regions. With Yescapa, you can rent directly from local owners spread across Southern France, choosing from a wide range of vehicles that match your group size and travel style. Whether you want to explore the Pont du Gard, wander through the ochre villages of the Luberon, or park up near the turquoise waters of Cassis, peer-to-peer sharing means competitive prices and personal recommendations from people who know the region best.
Southern France is a year-round destination for campervan travel, with each season offering something distinct. May and June bring warm days ideal for driving through Provence's lavender fields, which bloom spectacularly around Valensole from mid-June. Summer is the most popular season — book early on Yescapa to secure the best choice of vehicles from local owners. The Festival d'Avignon in July fills the city with theatre and performance, while September's grape harvest across Languedoc vineyards makes autumn a rewarding time to hire a campervan and explore at a relaxed pace. Mild winters along the Côte d'Azur keep coastal routes enjoyable even in December.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
From Perpignan, head up to Font-Romeu, the Col du Tourmalet, Foix, and the Niaux caves, then return via Quillan. This 600 km circuit crosses high mountain landscapes and unspoilt valleys. Mountain pass roads are well maintained, though a campervan offers easier handling. Several altitude campsites provide pitches with panoramic views.
Starting from Marseille, this 250 km loop follows the Calanques National Park to Cassis, then continues to La Ciotat and Bandol before returning via Aubagne. The narrow coastal roads are well suited to campervans. Allow time for swimming stops in the coves between Cassis and La Ciotat.
Around 200 km through the heart of Provence, from Cavaillon to Apt via Gordes, Roussillon, and Bonnieux. Roads wind between hills and lavender fields. A campervan is ideal for navigating the lanes around these perched villages. Several parking areas welcome smaller leisure vehicles along the route.
From Montpellier to Carcassonne and on to Collioure, this 400 km route crosses the Minervois vineyards, follows the Canal du Midi, and drops down to the Côte Vermeille. Motorhomes can easily find service areas along the canal. Stop in Narbonne for the Archbishop's Palace and its covered food market.
Set off from Manosque towards the Valensole plateau, continue to the Gorges du Verdon and Lac de Sainte-Croix, then reach Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. This 350 km circuit combines nature and characterful villages. Roads are wide and suitable for motorhomes. Several campsites line the lake for peaceful overnight stays.
From Nice to Perpignan via Aix-en-Provence, Montpellier, and Narbonne, this 550 km drive follows the entire Mediterranean coastline. Alternate between beaches, historic cities, and natural parks such as the Camargue. The route suits both campervans and motorhomes. Plan overnight stops at seaside campsites along the way.

The South of France offers a wide range of campsites, from seaside pitches along the Mediterranean coast to spots tucked into the Provençal hinterland or at the foot of the Pyrenees. Most provide service points, electric hook-ups, and sanitary blocks suited to both motorhomes and campervans. Whether you prefer a family-friendly site with a pool or a quieter, nature-focused ground, you will find options across every part of the South.
Most motorways in Southern France are toll roads (autoroutes à péage). The A9 along the Mediterranean coast and the A7 heading south through the Rhône Valley both require toll payments, which can be made by card or cash at booths, or via a Liber-t electronic tag. Motorhomes and campervans over 3.5 tonnes are classified as Class 2 vehicles, meaning higher toll fees. Speed limits for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes are 130 km/h on motorways and 110 km/h on dual carriageways, while those over 3.5 tonnes must keep to 110 km/h and 100 km/h respectively. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome parking are well spaced along major routes, typically every 30 to 50 kilometres.
ENG: Please take my advice and book with these lovely people. The service is great, the camper is insane. The overall experience is great. NL: Volg mijn advies op en boek bij deze geweldige mensen. De service is top en de camper is waanzinnig. De hele ervaring is geweldig.
Our experience renting the car and communicating with the owner of the motorhome was wonderful. The vehicle is equipped with everything necessary for traveling and enjoying pleasant camping trips. Etienne and his wife were very kind and always eager to help. I recommend renting this vehicle to everyone.
Highly recommended traveller, kind and super helpful. Respect for cleaning the van in and out. Thanks for your rent Coralie :)
We had an amazing trip with the big Yellow guy! The car is a real trustworthy opponent for the Portuguese mountains. We were with 2 persons and had more than enough space. When we arrived we got a clear and relaxed explanation of where we can find everything in te van and how it works, also got a great suggestion for a destination to start the trip with. Thank you!
We had an amazing experience renting Francisco’s motorhome. We really enjoyed the entire trip — the motorhome was very comfortable, well equipped, and perfect for our journey. Having air conditioning was also a huge bonus, especially during the hot days, and it’s definitely not something you can take for granted with motorhomes of this type. Francisco and his team were always available whenever we had a question or needed help, and communication was excellent throughout the entire rental. Overall, it was a fantastic trip, and the motorhome made the experience even better. If we decide to rent a motorhome again in the future, I wouldn’t think twice about contacting Francisco again. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a great motorhome and a smooth, stress-free experience. Thank you for everything, Francisco! We hope to rent from you again in the future!
