Milano's Duomo cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete, with construction beginning in 1386 and the final details finished only in 1965. This extraordinary city in Lombardy blends historic architecture with modern design, making it a rewarding base for exploring northern Italy by campervan. Wander through the Pinacoteca di Brera, home to masterpieces by Raphael and Caravaggio, or spend an afternoon at the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci, Italy's largest science museum. The Navigli district, with its canal-side restaurants and weekend markets, offers a relaxed contrast to the grandeur of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Lake Como sits just 50 km to the north, while the medieval towers of Bergamo are only 56 km to the northeast — both easy day trips by motorhome. Milano's flat terrain and well-connected ring roads make navigating a larger vehicle straightforward, and the surrounding Po Valley opens up routes in every direction. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from a local owner in the Milano area, often picking up your vehicle from a convenient neighbourhood rather than a distant depot. This peer-to-peer approach means more choice, competitive pricing, and personal tips from someone who knows the region well.
Milano welcomes visitors year-round, with each season offering its own appeal. Spring is ideal for exploring the city and nearby lakes, and the Salone del Mobile in April draws design enthusiasts from across the globe. Summer opens up longer days for road trips into the Alps, while autumn brings the grape harvest season across Lombardy's vineyards. December transforms Milano with festive markets around Piazza Duomo and the celebrated opera season opening at Teatro alla Scala on 7 December. Booking a campervan through Yescapa gives you access to peer-to-peer pricing, which can be especially helpful during popular periods. Plan ahead for spring and summer to secure the best choice of vehicles in the Milano area.
Milan is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 50 km north from Milan to reach Lake Como, where the waterfront town of Bellagio sits at the junction of the lake's three branches. Visit Villa Carlotta and its botanical gardens, then drive along the western shore to Cernobbio. Several campervan-friendly parking areas line the lakeside, making it easy to stop and explore at your own pace.
Drive 58 km northeast from Milan to Bergamo, where the walled Città Alta perches on a hilltop connected by a funicular. Wander through Piazza Vecchia and visit the Cappella Colleoni with its Renaissance façade. Park in the lower town — Bergamo Bassa has spacious lots suitable for motorhomes — and take the funicular up to explore the old quarter on foot.
Travel 145 km east from Milan to Verona, home to the Roman Arena and Juliet's balcony on Via Cappello. Continue to Lake Garda's western shore, stopping at Sirmione to walk through the Grotte di Catullo ruins. Campsites along the lake offer pitches with direct water access, ideal for a multi-day campervan stay with swimming and hiking.
Head 185 km south from Milan towards the Ligurian coast and the five colourful villages of the Cinque Terre. Park your motorhome at La Spezia and take the regional train to Riomaggiore, Manarola and Vernazza. The coastal paths between villages offer spectacular walking. La Spezia has dedicated campervan areas with services, making it the best base for exploring this stretch of coastline.
Drive 300 km northwest from Milan through the Simplon Pass into Switzerland. Stop at Domodossola for its Saturday market, cross into the Valais region and visit the thermal baths of Leukerbad. Continue to Zermatt's valley for views of the Matterhorn. The Simplon road is well-maintained and suitable for campervans. Wild camping spots in Swiss valleys offer peaceful overnight stays.
Travel 280 km southeast from Milan to Florence, following the Via Emilia through Parma and Bologna. Taste Parmigiano-Reggiano at a dairy farm near Parma, explore Bologna's porticoes and the Piazza Maggiore, then arrive in Florence to see the Uffizi Gallery and Brunelleschi's dome. Campsites around Florence sit in the Tuscan hills with panoramic views, and many welcome motorhomes with full hook-ups.

The area around Milan offers a good selection of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Most are located in the green belt surrounding the city or near the lakes to the north, providing easy access to Milan's centre by public transport. Facilities typically include electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks, Wi-Fi and dedicated service areas for waste disposal. Whether you prefer a lakeside pitch or a convenient urban base, you will find well-equipped options within a short drive of Milan.
Parking a motorhome or campervan in Milan requires some planning, as the city centre is covered by Area C, a congestion charge zone active on weekdays. Larger vehicles are best parked at dedicated facilities on the outskirts, where you can connect to the metro or suburban rail. Overnight parking in public spaces is generally permitted unless signposted otherwise, but dedicated service areas offer a more comfortable and secure option. Always check height restrictions before entering underground or covered car parks.
Pepe was lovely from beginning to end. All of our requests were accommodated and he was responsive when needed. The pickup service was very nice, even though we were a bit delayed at the beginning (also around 23.30) he still patiently waited for us at the airport without a hassle. This made the beginning of the trip very nice and the small gift was consumed almost immediately, thank you once again. ;) The van was super also, the bad is very very comfy, I am 183 cms and it was perfect for my height. The AC is a very nice addition also, which made even the staying in the blazing sun bearable in the van. Would recommend both the host and the van to anyone!
We had a superb long weekend trip in Gonçalo’s converted van and couldn’t be happier with the experience. Gonçalo was a very friendly owner and always responded promptly to all our questions, which made everything easy and stress-free from the beginning. The van came with everything we needed and was very well prepared for our trip. It was comfortable, practical, and perfectly suited for our family of four. Gonçalo was also incredibly helpful throughout, which we really appreciated. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend both Gonçalo and his van to anyone looking for a great family campervan experience.
Perfect. Everything went smoothly, good communication, owners very friendly, the vehicle was just as described and in very good condition. We can definitely recommend for future renters!
Mathieu was easy to communicate with and flexible. The van is perfect- simple, well organized, and very comfortable for sleeping. Mathieu equips the kitchen with some basics, and 2 camping chairs- it is really nice.
We had a great Motorhome Experience in the Dordogne area in France! Guy’s motorhome had everything we needed for a comfortable and adventurous stay. A great kingsize bed (for a motorhome anyway…) and large fridge, warm water, heating everything is there. If you’re looking for a reliable modern motorhome rental , we highly recommend renting Guy’s motorhome. Marian & Wim.
